"In the day to day trenches of adult life, there is no such thing as atheism... Everyone worships. The only choice we get is what to worship."
-David Foster Wallace, This is Water
There are many incredibly attractive, but ultimately false gods wooing us, especially in a place like NYC. We choose to worship the risen Christ - The OneTrueKing. Central to authentic worship is a willingness to take risks, and place ourselves in situations where God's power must bridge the gap between our current circumstance and a desired outcome. Or, as John Wimber (founder of the Vineyard) might say, "I'm a fool for Christ... Whose fool are you?"
Our vision is to become a movement of scattered disciples who bring the love and message of Christ anywhere, at anytime and to anyone as the Spirit leads.
We exist to equip people to follow Christ and be transformed into His image for the sake of others.
We are a church that gathers and scatters! We aim to gather together as believers on Thursday nights and then scatter all across our city, our workplaces and our neighborhoods, bringing life to those around us. It is our primary goal to equip you to follow the way of Jesus every, single day of your life so that you will look more and more like Him and bring the love of Christ to others.
The166 is neither a street address nor a Bible passage. It comes from the following: there are 168 hours in a week and there is a strong temptation for many of us to outsource our spirituality to the two hours we spend at church and the rest of our lives are led as functional atheists. We believe gathering together for church should empower the other 166 hours in a week, and it's important enough to us that we decided to lead with this. As Wimber would say, “the meat is in the street.” This suggests that the church has its mission and purpose not in what it does inside the church walls, but outside of it.
OUR BIBLICAL INSPIRATION
The Scripture passage that captures our aspiration is found in Acts 4:13. Apostles Peter and John are causing mayhem - preaching the gospel, healing the sick, converting thousands. When called to account for their actions before the religious authorities, Luke notes:
"When they (the authorities) saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were ordinary, unschooled men, they were astonished, and they took note that these men had been with Jesus."
Our desire is to see ordinary people making a ruckus in whatever sphere they are currently in by leading radically surrendered lives and taking godly risks. The thing that distinguishes us is not our talents, our credentials or our social standing, but simply that we have been with Jesus.
The166 subscribes to the historic faith of the Christian Church as expressed in the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed and we support the Vineyard USA Statement of Faith as revised and amended.
